More Poetry

No Poet

I have always wanted to be an author,
one of the talented, creative kind,
able to weave a mystery around lore
or, write a saga that would blow your mind.

Perhaps a Shakespeare, "To be or not to be-"
but that's out of the question.
He was too classy a writer for me,
so maybe another suggestion.

Perhaps a short story writer, like Edgar Allan Poe,
who wove cosmic words into tales of the macabre.
Strangely, add a t to his name and wouldn't you know,
he was also a poet who's Annabel Lee makes some sob.

Poe could spin a tale around a lurid thought
using words so grand.
In fact, his writings were often fraught
with words I do not understand.

Perhaps a historical saga writer could be my forte,
emulating Michener with stories of the world.
Yet, how would a novice writer like me portray,
eras of war and romance in epic unfurled.

Maybe I should take a chance
and copy the styles of Gray or Harte,
write a tale of western romance,
where the hero triumphs and wins her heart.

How about a crime novel full of suspense?
A merger of the talents of Gardner and Spillane,
in creating a murder mystery so intense,
you would want to read it again and again.

Or perhaps, a novel about true life conflict,
written in the character of Hemingway.
Include a love affair to make it perfect,
so dynamic a story it could become a play
staged in magnificence on old Broadway.

You might rightly believe this is only a dream,
that a dreamer like me could never attain.
Yet, as incredible as it may seem,
those writers I have mentioned by name,
began like me, with imagination and a dream.
